"May 13, 2017 - Day 0 - The journey starts today. I'm not entirely sure what to write. This morning was the last time I'll see my husband in months. Maybe years. I'm still feeling numb apprehension from leaving him for so long. None of us know what we're up against. With only 27 of us, we have to be discreet. We have to tread softly and treat every moment we're here with utmost respect. Most people will never see what we are about to witness. Hell, most people couldn't even see it if they were standing in front of it. Call it divine intervention, extraterrestrial, or maybe just collective hallucination. Whatever it is, we must know. Before the others find out. I'll be sure to keep the journal updates regular and as detailed as possible. - Jessica"

"We made it closer to the site today. Jake and Paul had to turn around earlier this time. For some reason, though, I was able to push on. I'm not sure what was different this time. Hopefully we'll find out soon."

"After yesterday's ring of fire, we wanted to scope out the area before proceeding. As our drone hovered over the VW crash site, a similar ring of fire (plasma?) ignited! These anomalies are beginning to get under my skin. I insisted we send out a broadcast of the findings; secretly, to confirm that we weren't all going crazy together."

"We need to fall back. W-we need to step down. We pushed too hard. This has to stop; now. This is...wait, where is Jake?! WAS HE AT THE PLANT? No, please no! I need to get dow-" [the tape cuts out]

"After hiking for three days, the exhaustion set in like I've never felt before. As I neared this vibrant tree, a feeling of constraint overtook me, like my clothes were perverted hands, grasping. On the brink of delirious collapse, I disrobed and approached the tree. Its energy overwhelmed me, forcing me to turn away."

"Today, I drove right up to the perimeter before going on foot. They don't recommend bringing vehicles that close, due to the gasoline incident, but physical stamina has its limits! I don't want a repeat of last time."

"A wildly thick plume of smoke rose over the northernmost island. We hadn't ventured out to it before, considering it uninhabited, but now we must find a way. Maybe during low tide under the veil of night we can sneak across."

"Late last night we got a little too comfortable. Amidst the seductive allure of progress, our judgment slipped into an uncanny darkness. Fate would have it that we 'survived,' waking up on the forest floor hours later. After a quick assessment, I found no signs of struggle or trauma, but my muscles feel fuzzy. Not sore. Fuzzy. A feeling I have never come across before this morning. Progress sure comes at a price... I'll have to visit Stan today and see if he can diagnose this fuzziness."

"By the time the motion-activated camera was triggered, the rock was already there, apparently suspended in air. No sign on how it got there; maybe it was rigged or something. But as soon as we got a glimpse, a sort of smokescreen erupted out of thin air. By the time we went to the site the following morning, there wasn't a trace of the rock or any residue."

"The moment I heard the roar, I grabbed my keys and sped to Lookout Point. I didn't get there in time to witness the cause, but someone somewhere must have made a breakthrough. Thank God. Another year of this and I think I might have given in to it."
